About the Artist...
Danette Smith has been a self-taught artist since childhood. She used many different art techniques over the years, but now her passion is Pyrography.
She has recently moved to Fort Meade, FL. permanently.
(Danette is presenting a burning to Wayne Newton.)
Pyrography is the technique of using heat/fire to create art. In Greek “pyro” means fire and “graph” means art. It is the art of drawing with fire, also known as wood burning.
This technique is very versatile because it can create designs on wood, leather, paper, gourds, and other mediums, using heated tools that burn away some of the top surface.
Her work is inspired by photography. She describes her style as photo-realism. Danette has a deep connection with nature and animals and uses her camera to embrace that connection on her many travels.
Danette believes that 'The eyes are the window to the soul' in any portrait...and she starts out by burning the eyes first. She not only captures the soul of the portrait, but she leaves behind a piece of her soul and heart when doing it.
Danette has exhibited in juried woodcarving and fine art shows in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida and Canada. She has become an award winning artist and her works have received local as well as international recognition. She even presented one of her works to noted entertainer Wayne Newton as a gift.
In 2007 she assisted with the first "Wood Burning Celebrations & Competition Exhibit" in Cook Forest, PA.
In 2008 she assisted with the second "Wood Burning Celebrations & Competition Exhibit"
in Cook Forest, PA.
In 2011, Danette assisted with the "20th Century Pyrographers" Exhibit at the Andrews Art Museum in North Carolina. It was the first "All Pyrography Show" in a Museum. She also entered three of her pieces into that exhibit.
Photos of her artwork have been published several times in Chip Chats magazine, and the new Pyrography Magazine published by Fox Chapel Publishers, in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014,2015, 2016, 2017, and again in 2018.
She wrote an article for the second issue of the pyrography magazine on "How to turn a photo into a pattern".
Danette is a proud member of:
National Wood Carvers Association and Chip Chats Magazine;
International Association of Pyrographic Artists, (I.A.P.A.);
Pyrographic Art Group;
The Lumber Jocks;
